Plot summary
The idea at the center comes from a professor of anthropology born in Leningrad, who named it in a 2006 book about Soviet life. Everyone there knew the system was failing, he wrote, but no one could picture an alternative, so politicians and citizens alike kept up the appearance of a working society, and the shared delusion became the accepted norm. The same shift took hold in the West, where governments, financiers and technological utopians gave up on shaping a complicated reality and built a simpler one for multi-national corporations, kept stable by neoliberal governments.
