Plot summary
Kylie Bucknell tries to steal the safe out of an ATM and does not get away, and her record of repeat offenses leads a judge to order eight months of home detention at the house where her mother lives. She shares it with Miriam, her mother, and her step-father Graeme, and gets along with neither. Amos, a security contractor, explains that the monitor on her ankle will bring the police if she steps off the premises. Miriam says the house is haunted, which Kylie treats as her mother's usual talk. When something grabs Kylie in the basement, she decides an intruder has got in, and she attacks a figure in the house. He is Amos, there about a breach of the monitor. Amos takes the haunting seriously and says he will come back with equipment for ghost hunting.

- Budget problems limited which homes the filmmakers could use for the house's exterior shots, and renovations made to the exterior of the house they picked during filming caused further trouble for director Gerard Johnstone.
- Gerard Johnstone was inspired to make a horror film after watching Ghosthunters on television, and also drew on The Changeling and The Legend of Hell House. He wrote Kylie as someone who wouldn't scare easily, so that her fear would be more palpable when it came.
