Plot summary
Jack Whitman lies on a bed in a Paris hotel room in a yellow bathrobe, reading the newspaper and ordering room service in broken French. The phone rings: Rhett, his former girlfriend, is arriving and asks which room is his. Jack agrees to see her, then hurries to tidy the room, starts a song on his stereo and runs a bath. In a gray suit, he opens the door to her. She asks about the music; when he does not answer, she walks in and hands him a bouquet. He turns his head when she moves to kiss him, and they embrace instead. He asks how she found him, and she says it was not hard.

- Wes Anderson got Natalie Portman's email address from Scott Rudin, who had produced Closer, and approached her cold. Both she and Jason Schwartzman worked for nothing, and Anderson paid for the rest of the short out of his own pocket.
- The Paris short was made by a crew of fifteen in two and a half days, with props from Anderson's own flat and editing done on his computer in a week. Even with Marc Jacobs clothes and a handmade Louis Vuitton suitcase, he called it like making a student film.
- Anderson meant Hotel Chevalier to stand alone, and only just before shooting noticed that Schwartzman's Jack matched a character in the feature he was writing, which a year later became The Darjeeling Limited.
- So much of the coverage fixed on Natalie Portman's brief nude scene and the bruises on her body that she said it depressed her, and she afterwards swore off appearing nude on film.
