Plot summary
Younghwan, a published poet, has been staying two weeks at a hotel beside the Han River; the owner, who admires his poetry, lets him stay without paying. Believing his death is close, he invites his two estranged sons, Gyeongsu and Byeongsu, to visit. The brothers, jealous of one another, argue as they wait for him, and Byeongsu, a well-known film director, says he is afraid of women. Also at the hotel is Ahreum, who pretends that her left hand is badly burned, and her friend Yeonju, who worries about how Ahreum has handled a recent breakup. After a sudden snowfall, Younghwan approaches the two women outside, remarks on their beauty, and asks them to have a drink; they turn him down.
