Trailer

Plot summary

A team of twelve Xeno Project archaeologists and scientists works on a frozen planet, excavating alien ruins. They find a cave system whose walls carry markings and whose crystals are of unknown origin. An explosion leaves photographer Dean White crippled and Ricky Williams hurt. Mitch reads the markings as evidence of dualism: the planet orbits a binary star, and its rulers seem to have been twins. Sharon notes that the crystals sit within an energy field and proposes that a chemical intelligence controlled the civilization. Inside the base, one crystal sample begins to pulsate.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Horror Planet (1981)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Before Britain's Video Recordings Act 1984, Inseminoid was one of the 82 "video nasties" whose tapes police could seize and destroy on grounds of obscenity.
  • Stephanie Beacham took the role of Kate to support her two young children, turning down a play she really wanted that would have paid her just £65 a week.
  • Shooting inside caves brought cold, damp, airless conditions that caused numerous minor injuries to the cast and crew and damaged equipment, and some on the 12-hour days felt intense claustrophobia.
  • Director Norman J. Warren clashed with American actor Robin Clarke, who kept pushing his own ideas; during a fight scene Warren screamed at him to shut up, after which Clarke hardly said a word.
  • Falling behind schedule, Norman J. Warren cut three pages of scenes of Ricky's rampage in the caves down to a single shot; the shoot still overran by two days.
  • With no room in the caves, the crew had to set up the production office, dressing rooms and make-up rooms in a car park some distance away.
  • Because the low budget ruled out hiring an orchestra, Warren and composer John Scott agreed on an electronic score, built through many hours of multitracking and overdubbing.
  • The most graphic shots of Sandy giving birth were cut so the British Board of Film Censors would not refuse the film a certificate.
