Plot summary
King Krewl rules the Emerald City as a cruel dictator. He has chosen the old courtier Googly-Goo as a husband for Princess Gloria, but Gloria loves Pon, the gardener's boy. Krewl takes Gloria to the witch Old Mombi, who freezes her heart by pulling it out and coating it with ice, so that her love for Pon will end. In a cornfield, two farmers set a Scarecrow on a pole, and a ceremony brings him to life; his life is credited to the Spirit of the Corn. Mombi captures Dorothy Gale, a lost girl from Kansas, and locks her in the witch's castle.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's opening reel was lost for years; when it was recovered in the 1990s it carried no titles, so Dick Martin's 1960s titles stayed in use, falsely crediting Baum as director, misspelling Mai Wells and omitting Smollett's and Haydon's credits.
- In September 2024 Nate Barlow premiered a restoration at the CharlOz festival in Charlotte, North Carolina, rebuilt from fresh 4K transfers of three partial 35mm prints, including two reels of original picture negative rediscovered at the Library of Congress.
- Baum's screenplay for the film added so many new characters and such a large new story that it later became the basis for his 1915 book The Scarecrow of Oz.
