Plot summary
Benjamin Barois is certain he will become a great doctor. His first post is in the department headed by his father, Dr. Barois, and there he joins Abdel Rezzak, an intern from Algeria with much more experience than he has. Responsibility overwhelms him, his father is almost never in the ward, and the work is not what he hoped. On a night shift he attends Jean-Michel Lemoine, a homeless man with abdominal pains, prescribes him analgesics, and cannot record an ECG because the machine malfunctions. With Abdel he also looks after Mrs Richard, a former gymnast of eighty who has metastatic cancer and has just had surgery on her femur.
