Plot summary
Raj Batra owns a boutique in Chandni Chowk and shares a home there with his wife Mita and their daughter Pia, who is five. Both are convinced that only a place at an elite English-medium school will put the girl on the path into Delhi's high society, and their choice falls on Delhi Grammar School, which ranks first among the city's schools. To satisfy its residency rule they leave their house for a villa in Vasant Vihar and hire a consultant to coach them for the interview, but their English is not strong enough and Pia is refused. Raj then hears from a worker at his shop about the government quota that keeps school seats for poor families, and a broker explains how wealthy parents exploit the scheme. He and Mita decide to pass themselves off as poor.
