Plot summary
Thane Furrows writes children's books, seldom leaves his home, eats cereal, and finds nearly everything around him irritating. He wants his stories to teach children useful things, and he keeps no animals, only a cardboard dog named Pete. Across one day, small annoyances pile up: a fly lands in his breakfast, an automated survey about carpet cleaning keeps calling, and an insurance salesman named Ray knocks at the door. His friend Al visits in the afternoon and tries to talk him out of his cynicism. Melanie, the wife of his employer, comes by for a book he is writing. Through the day come phone calls, letters and voices that all point to something happening at eight o'clock.

- Jim Carrey agreed to a small role as a favour to his friend Steve Oedekerk but went uncredited: his contract barred his name from the film's title, closing credits and advertising credit block. His management asked producers not to use his name or likeness, yet he was featured prominently in the marketing.
- High Strung was financed by Vladimir Horunzhy, a former orchestra conductor, and rock guitarist Sergei Zholobetsky, Russians who fled to the United States in 1979 after refusing to join the Communist Party. Horunzhy persuaded Zholobetsky to invest his entire life savings; the film cost $400,000.
