Plot summary
A clinic called the Psycho-Neurotic Institute for the Very, Very Nervous sits on an oceanside cliff, and Dr. Richard Thorndyke has been hired as its new administrator. Brophy, his driver and photographer, brings him to the place, where Nurse Charlotte Diesel, Dr. Charles Montague and Dr. Philip Wentworth greet him and Professor Vicktor Lillolman, his former mentor, now works. Thorndyke has "high anxiety," a condition that mixes acrophobia with vertigo, and the cliff top does not help. He is replacing Dr. Ashley, who died mysteriously, and Brophy suspects foul play. Noises at night and a light shining from the violent ward point Thorndyke toward matters at the institute that the staff do not explain.
