Plot summary
Alphonse Perrier du von Scheck runs a real estate company called FutureTech Industries, and he announces plans to redevelop the neighborhood of Hillwood as a high-rise shopping mall. Arnold Shortman, a fourth grader, and his best friend Gerald Johanssen try to keep their homes. Helga Pataki finds out that her father, Big Bob, has signed a deal to put a bigger branch of his beeper shop inside the mall. Arnold's block party against the plan fails when Scheck's employees take the permit, and the police arrest his grandmother Gertie, so the neighbors start selling to FTI. Grandpa Phil tells Arnold about the Tomato Incident, a battle fought after the Pig War on the ground where the Sunset Arms boarding house stands.
