Plot summary

Moon Jeong-sook runs a travel agency in Busan that is not doing well. One day she scolds her daughter for not adjusting at school. The next day her housekeeper of sixteen years, Bae Jeong-gil, gets upset and quits, which puzzles Jeong-sook. Visiting Jeong-gil's house, she finds her protecting a violent son who suffers from congenital syphilis. Jeong-sook's friends propose she organize a welfare group for comfort women, the Korean women the Japanese imperial military forced into sexual slavery during World War II, a suggestion they make partly so her business reflects well on her. Searching for the surviving women, she meets old women haunted by abuse and rejected by their families. Ten of them become plaintiffs, and thirteen lawyers take their claim to court in Shimonoseki.
