Plot summary
Bobby Garfield returns to the town where he grew up after his friend Sully dies, and remembers the summer he was eleven. In that summer he lives with his widowed mother, Liz, and spends his days with Carol Gerber and Sully. Liz takes in a boarder, Ted Brautigan, an older man who befriends the boy. Ted pays Bobby a dollar a week to read the newspaper aloud to him and asks him to keep watch for signs of the low men, strangers he says want to take him back. Bobby sees one of these signs but says nothing, not wanting to lose his new friend.
