Plot summary
Heart of a Dog centers on Laurie Anderson's memories of Lolabelle, her dog, a companion who played piano and painted with her paws. The film moves between footage from the animal's life and imagined scenes of her passage through the bardo. Around that story Anderson gathers her reflections on life and death, and on her mother and her husband, Lou Reed. She also describes her own time in downtown New York in the period after the September 11 attacks. Arte, the Franco-German broadcaster, commissioned the film, and Anderson composed and performed its score herself, drawing on pieces from her earlier projects.
