Plot summary
Carolyn Cassady's account of her own life with two writers of the Beat Generation is the basis of the story. In the late 1950s and through the 1960s, she is married to Neal Cassady, while Jack Kerouac, his friend and fellow writer, is never far from the couple. The three are caught in a love triangle, and Kerouac's work on his novel On the Road affects all of them. Ira, another member of the circle, is based on Allen Ginsberg.

- Beat writer William S. Burroughs visited the set of Heart Beat and wrote about it in Rolling Stone, saying the past "hung in the air" because of the film's realism; sitting with Nick Nolte, who played Neal Cassady, he felt Neal sitting there in his suit.
- Distributor Warner Bros. disliked Heart Beat, did not think it commercial enough, and the marketing memo for the film set out a one-word strategy: "Punt."
