Plot summary
Pansy Deacon lives in London with her husband Curtley, a plumber, and their adult son Moses, whom she scolds for having no aspirations. Her temper flares at everyone she meets, relative or stranger; anxiety keeps her indoors, and animals and flowers repel her. Her sister Chantelle, who supports herself as a hairdresser and has two grown daughters, keeps pressing her to visit the grave of their mother, Pearl, on Mother's Day, the fifth anniversary of her death, and Pansy hesitates. In the days before the anniversary arguments with strangers pile up, while Chantelle remains the one person who still tries to reach her.
