Plot summary
Anne is a university student in Angoulême in 1963, counting on her degree to carry her away from her working-class background. Fellow students mock her as promiscuous, and finals are near. A doctor tells her she is pregnant, though she insists she is still a virgin, and when she asks him to end the pregnancy he refuses her, saying the law forbids it. A second doctor in the city gives her an injection that he says will bring on a miscarriage. Nothing follows, and Anne begins looking for someone to perform a surgical abortion. A classmate, Jean, tells her he knows no one and proposes sex instead, and the friends she confides in turn away from her.
