Plot summary
Tina is bored of school and wants to get away, and she plans to drop out and leave with Tino, the carny who works a visiting auto-scooter and has his own reasons for moving on. Robby, a shy new boy in her class, falls for the extrovert Tina straight away, and his hopes go nowhere, because her attention belongs to Tino and his car. When Tino drives off without her, Tina persuades Robby to take her after him on his motor-scooter, and she keeps her real purpose to herself. He agrees, and the two set off on a random trip together.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hangin' Out (1983)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's two stars, the singer Nena and her co-star Markus Mörl, had an affair during the making of Gib Gas – Ich will Spass, which showcases the music of both of them.
- Nena distanced herself from the film very quickly. At the peak of her international fame from "99 Luftballons", she told New Musical Express in May 1984: "Don't talk about this fucking film. I hate it – it follows me wherever we go."
- "Leuchtturm", one of six Nena band tracks featured in the film, went on to become a top 10 hit in Germany on two separate occasions, in 1983 and 2003.
- The film includes an "exclusive" version of Markus Mörl's German top 5 hit "Kleine Taschenlampe brenn'", with Nena singing female sections performed originally by Andrea-Maria Schneider; the pair performed it live at a 2002 concert marking 20 years since "Nur geträumt".
