Plot summary
Beatstreet draws crowds into East German cinemas in the summer of 1985, and breakdancing spills into the streets. Eighteen-year-old Frank is electrified and gathers friends in Dessau into a crew he calls the Break Beaters. They perform outdoors, and the group comes to lead the breakdance movement in the GDR. The state keeps a close watch on how young people spend their free time, and the dancers draw official attention sooner than they would like. Since the authorities cannot ban what they dislike, they try to control it instead: breakdancing is relabeled acrobatic show dancing, while the Break Beaters become a showcase troupe that travels the country.
