Plot summary
After escaping a police station six years earlier, Michael Myers and Jamie Lloyd are now held by a Druid-like cult and its leader, the Man in Black. On Halloween Eve, Jamie gives birth and flees with her baby, Michael pursuing. In Haddonfield, Tommy Doyle lives across from the old Myers house, now home to Kara Strode and her son Danny. Tommy hears Jamie's radio plea for help and finds the baby at a bus station, naming him Steven. He tells Kara that Michael is driven by the Thorn curse to kill his family on Halloween, and that Steven is meant to be his final sacrifice. Dr. Loomis has also heard the call and returns to help.

- The workprint that test audiences saw, with 45 minutes of alternate footage and a different ending, became known as the Producer's Cut; bootleg DVDs sold on eBay and fan petitions pushed for an official release, which Scream Factory gave it in September 2014 on Blu-ray.
- Danielle Harris, then seventeen, filed paperwork to become legally emancipated so she could return as Jamie Lloyd, and was cast, but Dimension Films offered her a scaled $1,000 for a week's work, less than the emancipation had cost her, and she dropped out.
- The two cuts of the film sparked a legal battle between the production company Nightfall, which wanted to release the original cut, and the distributor Dimension Films, which had shot the additional material; Dimension won and its cut went to theaters.
- After test audiences disapproved of the film's finale, it was rushed back into production and reshot in Los Angeles in summer 1995 without Donald Pleasence, who had died on February 2, 1995 and had been in ill health during the initial shoot.
- The filmmakers approached Howard Stern for a cameo as the radio DJ Barry Sims, but he declined in order to appear in Private Parts, and Leo Geter was cast in the role instead.
- Shooting started on October 31, 1994 in Salt Lake City, Utah, but within the first week an early winter snowstorm hit and several scenes meant for exterior locations had to be moved indoors.
- On the last night of filming the crew were so far behind schedule that, to save on overtime payments, pages that had not been shot were scrapped and the closing shot of Michael's mask on the ground was done at the last minute.
