Plot summary
In February 1942, Allied convoy HX-25 sets out for Liverpool with thirty-seven merchant and troop ships. It passes into the Black Pit, the mid-Atlantic stretch that lies beyond the reach of protective aircraft. Four warships escort the convoy, among them the destroyer USS Keeling, whose radio call sign is Greyhound, under the command of Ernest Krause. Krause is in overall charge of the escorts, and this is his first wartime command, while the captains serving beneath him have already spent more than two years at war. German submarines are hunting the convoy.

- The film's fictional Polish destroyer ORP Viktor was modeled on scans of ORP Błyskawica, the real Grom-class destroyer that survives as a museum ship in Gdynia, Poland.
- The film's corvette HMCS Dodge was modeled on HMCS Sackville, the last surviving Flower-class corvette, with producers taking numerous 3D scans of the restored ship's exterior in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for the CGI version.
- A fictionalized version of the destroyer USS Kidd is mentioned in the film as having met an underwater decoy device on its first patrol, but the real USS Kidd was not launched until late February 1943.
