Plot summary
Colin Briggs, serving time at the experimental Edgefield prison, wants nothing more than to be left alone. His roommate, the elderly Fergus Wilks, shows him how to grow things, and Colin finds he has a feel for plants. A patch of double violets he plants in secret sets off an argument among the cellmates, and Governor Gerald Hodge puts Colin to work on a garden with Tony, Jimmy and Raw. The gardener and author Georgina Woodhouse visits, likes what she sees, and takes the men out on work release at an estate, where Colin meets her daughter, Primrose. Georgina presses the prison board to let the Edgefield gardeners compete at the Hampton Court Flower Show.
