Plot summary
A hip hop figure explores how the United States came to outlaw cannabis and what that prohibition did to the people caught in it. The film moves from the 1920s jazz era, when Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday were targets of racist policies, to the present, where marijuana is a booming business with an uncertain future. Musicians, lawyers, public figures and individuals whose own drug convictions reshaped their lives give accounts of the plant's mark on music and popular culture, and of the damage criminalization inflicted on Black and Latino communities. With more states moving to legalize, the racial disparities in the growing cannabis market come into view.
