Plot summary
The Bakhtiari are a tribe of Lurs in Persia, and their migration is for grass, the seasonal pasture their animals depend on. The route runs from Angora, modern-day Ankara in Turkey, to Bakhtiari country in western Persia. Haidar Khan heads the journey of 50,000 people and their animals. The trek crosses the Karun River and climbs Zard Kuh, a range within the Zagros Mountains.

- Reporter and former spy Marguerite Harrison supplied Cooper with food and blankets when he was a Russian prisoner in 1920, became a key member of the expedition and appears in the film as herself, though Ernest B. Schoedsack later said she had not done "a damn thing" on the trek.
- In making Grass, Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack and Marguerite Harrison became the first Westerners to make the Bakhtiari migration to pasture with the tribe.
