Plot summary

Agnès learns that Paul, her boyfriend of long standing, would rather share lodgings with two fellow students than move in with her. Paul is an upper-class young man about to start at a grande école, and his coursework leaves him little time for Agnès. She suspects he is drawn to Louis-Arnault, one of the roommates, who comes from an aristocratic family, and he denies any such attraction. She proposes a wager: the first of them to take Louis-Arnault to bed wins, and if she wins Paul must stop exploring that side of himself, while if he wins she will leave him. Mécir, a young Arab worker Paul encounters, grows infatuated with him, and through him Paul's thinking about class, cultural difference and sexuality starts to change.
