Plot summary
In Kaitaia, nineteen-year-old Gerry Austin comes across a lost wallet and keeps it, using the cash and the driver's license within it to rent a yellow Mini. With no fixed aim, he drifts down to Auckland. There, middle-aged John cannot persuade Sue, his girlfriend of six years, to remain with him. After an evening of drinking, John settles on a journey to Invercargill, where Sue's sister lives, hoping to win Sue back. Needing transport, he saves Gerry from a ticket for not wearing a seat belt, and Gerry offers him a lift part of the way. The pair stop for petrol in northern Waikato but drive off without paying, which draws police attention to the car.

- Goodbye Pork Pie was shot in November 1979 with only 24 cast and crew, and money was so tight that the police cars seen on screen doubled as crew and towing vehicles. Director Geoff Murphy performed some of the stunts himself.
- Goodbye Pork Pie was the first really financially successful New Zealand film of modern times, and its release is considered the coming-of-age of New Zealand cinema because it showed New Zealanders could make successful films about their own country.
- New Zealand band Street Talk provided most of the music heard in Goodbye Pork Pie and made up a large part of the soundtrack, but the group had already broken up by the time the film was released.
- The stretch of Cromwell, Central Otago, seen in Goodbye Pork Pie no longer exists: the part of the town shown in the film is now underwater, drowned by the Lake Dunstan hydroelectric project.
- The Christchurch railway station where the Mini is hidden in Goodbye Pork Pie closed in 1993 and was later used as a movie theater and by Science Alive, until the 2011 Christchurch earthquake badly damaged it; it was demolished in 2012.
