Plot summary

One afternoon in October 2013, on her way home in North Conway, New Hampshire, fourteen-year-old Abby Hernandez accepts a ride from a man in a truck. Nathaniel Kibby pulls a gun, destroys her phone and uses a stun gun on her, then takes her to a remote wooded property and locks her inside a soundproof storage container. A shock collar goes around her neck, cameras monitor her, and Kibby warns that a militia he says he commands will hurt her family if she escapes or tells the truth. Her mother, Zenya Hernandez, reports her missing and searches for her while local authorities open an investigation. News of the disappearance spreads, the community joins the search, and some people wonder whether Abby ran away; Zenya keeps pleading publicly for her daughter's return.
