Plot summary
Amanda cleans rooms at a hotel. When an apprentice named Rebecca arrives, the two become friends, pranking each other with extra rooms on the list and Do Not Disturb signs pulled off doors. Amanda lets herself into a room to clean it and finds a guest on the bed; he says he is leaving, then hides in the bathroom and attacks her. Afterwards she is pregnant and without work, and she talks with Rebecca about the baby, and about giving the child up for adoption. Amanda meets Catherine, a wealthy woman who has decided late to make a family on her own, and the two begin to work out an arrangement.
