Plot summary

Raju, a writer, talks his way past a guard at the Royal Mansion, where a director is shooting a film and cannot decide how it should end. The director brushes him off, then agrees to listen only if Raju first hears his own story. Raju's tale concerns the ghosts of Mumbai who lose the houses and trees they haunt as the city builds over them, and it settles on Raibahadur Seth Gendamal Hemraj, who owned a mill and the mansion and whose ghost now lives there. Gendamal and another spirit, Mr. Ramsey, hold an audition for ghosts needing shelter and take in a small group, among them the actress Manoranjana Kumari. The household learns that a businessman, Mr. Bhuteria, intends to demolish the mansion for a mall.
