Plot summary
The documentary chronicles the planning and failure of the 2017 Fyre Festival, organized by businessman Billy McFarland. McFarland promised supermodels and yachts. A social media agency promoted the festival, and a production company directed its promotional shoot. Guests who made the trip found tents and cheese sandwiches instead of the promised luxury. The film places the primary blame on McFarland, the festival's organizer.

- According to The New Republic, when the Fyre Festival fell apart, organizer Billy McFarland hired freelance cinematographer Michael Swaigen, who had filmed the festival's original viral ad, to shoot behind-the-scenes footage for a hoped-for "recovery documentary" to recoup his losses; when McFarland failed to pay him fully, Swaigen kept the footage.
- In a March 25, 2018 email, Jerry Media CEO and Netflix film producer Mick Purzycki told Swaigen he had final cut on the film and would not approve anything not done with integrity, though Netflix said the final cut was with the director.
- In the leadup to the releases of the competing documentaries, Chris Smith accused Fyre Fraud-director Jenner Furst of being unethical by agreeing to pay McFarland to appear in the film.
