Plot summary
Walter Campbell has spent years as a television star, and his girlfriend Lucy is younger than he is. He wants to end things with her, but the announcement that she is pregnant stops him, and he looks for space instead. That search takes him toward Nic, the daughter he has long been estranged from, who lives in Big Sur and resents how he neglected her and how he treats women. Nic's friend Kim needs a ride, and Walter agrees to take her. Kim has just come from the funeral of her mother, from whom she was also estranged, and is carrying emotional baggage of her own.

- After struggling to find a production company willing to finance the film, Michael J. Gallagher and Jana Winternitz were able, by 2017, to finance Funny Story independently thanks to the success of their production company, Cinemand.
- Director Gallagher shot the whole of Funny Story with a wide-angle lens, believing it benefited the film's comedy and showcased the actors' interactions, letting them breathe and experience the awkwardness of being stuck together in the shot.
- The part of Nic was written specifically with Jana Winternitz in mind, while Gallagher said finding the right actor for Walter, someone charming and narcissistic but good-hearted, took some time.
