Plot summary
Sent from another planet as a messenger urging humans toward peace, a robot is meant for MIT. A navigation error instead puts her in Amman, Jordan, during Black September in 1970. A bombing leaves her wandering the streets without identification. Sullivan, a British journalist, offers her shelter in his hotel room. She tells him what she is: a machine, an envoy dispatched to speak for peace. He cannot decide whether her account is true, yet her unusual view of the world appeals to him. The two fall into long conversations about how people live, what they believe, and what they do to one another.
