Plot summary

Deirdre Tompkins, Madge Axman, Annie Mallick and Jeanie are teenagers in the San Fernando Valley as the 1970s end. Deirdre is absorbed by her own sexuality and has troubles with boyfriends. Madge is unhappy about her weight, still a virgin, and lives with overprotective parents and a younger sister, Sissie. Annie drinks and uses drugs and keeps running away from Frank, her abusive father, a police officer. Jeanie takes care of the others, argues with her divorced mother Mary, and wishes her father Bryan, who manages tours for the rock band Angel, were closer to her. The four think school is a waste of time and feel cut off from the adults around them, and partying is how they forget their troubles. Annie is the least responsible of them, and Jeanie worries about her most.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Foxes (1980)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The script started from a question: what would happen if you dropped Louisa May Alcott into the San Fernando Valley today? The writer pitched the concept to Twentieth Century Fox, then interviewed "around 40 girls" starting in March 1977 and finished a first draft by November 1977.
  • The original title was Twentieth Century Foxes. Fox passed on the script and the project wound up with producer David Puttnam, who had a deal with Casablanca Pictures, for whom he had made Midnight Express.
  • The film was the feature directorial debut from Adrian Lyne. Producer David Puttnam had enjoyed success hiring debutant directors with a background in TV commercials, among them Ridley Scott, Alan Parker and Hugh Hudson, and that is where Lyne came from.
  • The film was Foster's penultimate major film appearance before she took a sabbatical from acting to attend Yale University, stepping away from the screen.
  • Foxes marked the acting debut of Cherie Currie, who took her first screen role in a cast led by Jodie Foster.
