Plot summary
An experimental lifeform called Subject 20 has been built by a team of researchers on the desert planet Xarbia, out of a synthetic DNA strain known as Proto B, in the hope of preventing a galaxy-wide food crisis. The creature mutates without control, kills every laboratory animal and seals itself inside a cocoon. Federation officer Mike Colby and his robot SAM-104 are sent to the station to look into the problem. Colby wants Subject 20 destroyed before it does more harm, but the scientists guard their work and argue for waiting. The crew there includes Gordon Hauser, Barbara Glaser, Tracy Baxter, Jimmy Swift, Brian Beale, Earl Richards and Cal Timbergen.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Forbidden World (1982)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Roger Corman gave director Allan Holzman four days to write, produce and direct a seven- to eight-minute opening of a space movie, offering him an astronaut, a robot and a version of Lawrence of Arabia in outer space. Holzman added a dogfight using footage from Battle Beyond the Stars, and Corman was impressed and signed him to direct.
- Forbidden World was shot under the working title Mutant on a 20-day schedule for under $1 million. The pace was so fast that cast and crew had to be careful what they touched or where they stepped, because the sets were often still wet with paint while filming.
- Shout! Factory's 2010 DVD and Blu-ray set of Forbidden World includes the original Allan Holzman cut that Roger Corman rejected because it had humor, since Corman wanted a straight sci-fi/horror film; it was the first time this cut was available anywhere.
- During editing, director Allan Holzman found he had insufficient footage of the titular mutant and called in John Carl Buechler to redo some of the sequences.
- Forbidden World shares some of its sets with the previous year's Corman-produced Galaxy of Terror, with the sets designed by James Cameron, and reuses footage recycled from the 1980 film Battle Beyond the Stars, also produced by Corman.
