For Madmen Only: The Stories of Del Close (2020) on Netflix

Plot summary

Del Close mentors scores of the most famous comedians and comic actors in the late twentieth century, Bill Murray and Tina Fey among them, yet he never becomes as famous as the people he teaches. He intends to write his life story for DC Comics. The film mixes interviews with colleagues and performers, archival clips, and staged scenes that recreate his stranger episodes. It draws on Wasteland, a horror comic Close writes with John Ostrander, published by DC Comics from 1987 to 1989. It also leads through sewers and mental wards, showing how he makes others famous while remaining unknown himself.
