Plot summary
Isaac Barr, a psychiatrist, is treating Diana Baylor for obsessive-compulsive disorder when Diana suggests he meet her sister, Heather Evans. Heather is married to Jimmy Evans, a gangster who keeps her under his control, and she tells Isaac that their father abused Diana and died in a fire. She says she is afraid of what Jimmy would do if she left him. Isaac and Heather begin an affair, and he urges her to get a divorce. Heather also has a condition, pathological intoxication, that alcohol sets off; a glass of wine at a restaurant with Jimmy brings on an episode that sends her to the hospital.

- Money reshaped the ending: the climax was written for the Golden Gate Bridge, then rewritten because the budget would not stretch to it. The finale was moved to a lighthouse, shot at Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero.
