Plot summary
Belfast in the late 1980s. Martin McGartland, 21, makes his living as a street hustler. The IRA is pressing him to join, and he holds back because of what he sees as its cruel street justice. The British police have another use for him: his ties in the community make him valuable, so they offer him money and a car to work for them. He accepts because he despises the IRA, and the IRA takes him on as a Volunteer. From inside he learns of planned attacks and passes word to Fergus, his police contact. His friends and family cannot be told. Lara, his girlfriend, only knows that he appears to be doing something for the IRA, and it worries her.

- Martin McGartland, the former IRA informer the film is about, publicly disowned it in The Sunday Times in March 2009, calling it fundamentally a lie and asking what "based on a true story" even means, and said Kari Skogland would have had a better film had she stuck to his book.
