Plot summary
From the sandlots of Waterbury, Connecticut, Jimmy Piersall works his way toward professional baseball, pushed at every step by his father, John Piersall, who wants the baseball career for him. Jimmy marries Mary, and the young couple live with his parents. When the Boston Red Sox choose him, it is for shortstop, a position he has little experience in, and he telephones his father to apologize. Daunted by the huge crowd at the ballpark for his first at bat in the major leagues and by his father watching from the stands, he steps up to the plate to face the pitcher.
