Plot summary
In 2010, Brian Eisch is a single father and a Sgt. First Class in the Army, raising Isaac, twelve, and Joey, seven. He leaves them with their uncle for a six-month deployment to Afghanistan, and the boys count the days until he comes home. During a two-week break they camp, hunt and fish together, and Brian says his worst fear is coming back so changed that he shouts at his children; his sons have heard such stories from friends. Back in the field he is shot in the leg while trying to rescue an Afghan National Army comrade. At Walter Reed Medical Center doctors treat the leg but cannot promise it will heal, and they raise the possibility of amputation.

- The documentary grew out of a 2010 New York Times article and multimedia piece on Sgt. First Class Brian Eisch, a single father deployed to Afghanistan. Catrin Einhorn asked Leslye Davis to join her in 2014 to keep documenting the family, and over the years they turned the material into a feature-length film.
