Plot summary

Families describe the same change in someone who has come back from combat. Veterans recovering from war-related trauma are given a mix of prescription medicines, and spouses and relatives tell of coping with injuries and of losing loved ones to suicide. About 22 veterans die by suicide each day. As the opioid crisis grows, more veterans use marijuana instead, calling it a safer and more effective option. The documentary traces prohibition back nearly a century, along with the political and racial motives behind it, and the teaching that marijuana is dangerous and a gateway drug. Researchers studying whether marijuana can treat PTSD, including one approved to test its efficacy, weigh in on whether it is safe.
