Britain's British Board of Film Classification passed Fat Girl uncut for cinemas but ordered the final rape scene removed for video, saying the scene could be used by paedophiles to 'groom' their victims into submitting to rape.- Catherine Breillat's experience while shooting Fat Girl inspired her 2002 film Sex Is Comedy, which is built around the shooting of one of its sex scenes; Roxane Mesquida, who played Elena, reprised the scene for the later film.
- Ontario's film review board banned Fat Girl in late 2001, objecting to its frank portrayal of teenage sexuality, but the ban was later overturned and the film played in the province's theatres in 2003.
- Breillat feared the film could be censored because the character Anaïs's breasts are shown in its final scene, saying she wanted the young actress to be flat-chested but that 'her body changed between casting and the end of shooting'.
