Plot summary
John Chapman is a Marine Corps veteran living with post-traumatic stress. After a game of Russian roulette, he walks into a convenience store just as it is being robbed, demands that one of the robbers shoot him, and disarms the robbers when the man hesitates. His sister Cindy, in New York for a wedding, scolds him for skipping his medication and says she is returning to Brazil, where she does charity work. Manny Ridley, a fellow veteran and diplomat, tells Chapman that Cindy has been severely beaten, and Chapman leaves for Brazil at once. There, Thiago Santo and Carlo Bororo are investigating her assault, and Ridley and Santo warn Chapman to stay away from the gangster-controlled favelas, but he insists on his own search. Katarina Da Silva, a beat cop, shows him where Cindy was found.
