Failan (2001) on Netflix

Plot summary

Failan loses both her parents and leaves for Korea hoping to find her only remaining relatives, but they moved to Canada more than a year earlier. With no family and no way to support herself, she goes through a matchmaking agency so that an arranged marriage will let her stay in the country. The man the agency pairs her with is Kang-jae, an old gangster whom his peers no longer respect and who is short of money. He accepts the match. All Failan has of her husband is a photograph. She imagines him coming to visit and writes letters telling him she misses him, but never hands them over. Kang-jae's one wish is a fishing boat and a return to his hometown.
