Plot summary
Bamseom is a scrap of vegetated land in the middle of the Han River, ringed by the city but too far out for a shout to carry, and Kim Seong-geun cannot swim. He washes up there after jumping off a bridge over the river, deep in debt and with no way forward. He searches the island, finds it mostly vegetation, and comes across a duck-shaped paddle boat. Living free of his debts and the worries of the city begins to suit him, though survival there is not easy. His plea for help, scrawled in the sand, reaches Kim Jung-yeon, who has stayed inside her apartment for years and photographs the moon at night. She throws bottles carrying messages onto the island, and he writes his answers in the sand.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Castaway on the Moon (2009)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Kim Seong-geun was originally meant to wear triangular underwear, but the costume was changed to square underwear after actor Jung Jae-young refused to wear it.
- The film was the first ever shot on Bamseom, and the production was specially authorized by the Seoul authorities; because the island is a nature reserve, only its beach scenes could be filmed there, while forest scenes were shot in Chungju and Changwon.
- To portray a man who drifted onto an uninhabited island, actor Jung Jae-young lost 7 kg over three months and stopped trimming his fingernails and toenails and cutting his hair.
- The two leads, both surnamed Kim, speak English to each other: director Lee Hae-jun wanted to show they are apart from the Korean-speaking mainstream, and that the isolates would have their own symbols rather than language.
