Plot summary
Sgt. Don Smith serves with the 94th Infantry Division near Nennig, Germany, during the Battle of the Bulge in January 1945. No one in high command believes that German forces would attack in subzero temperatures and near-blizzard weather. The assault comes before dawn anyway. Communications are down, and Smith has no option but to cross ground under enemy fire, unarmed and wounded, to reach the town and warn it of the attack. The story is drawn from actual accounts of the fighting. Dorrine waits for him at home, and he measures the life and love she offers against his duty.
