Plot summary
A Finnish working class woman in Sweden at the start of the 1900s, Maria wins a Contessa camera in a lottery alongside Sigfrid Larsson, and the two marry to share the prize. With a household of children to raise, she carries the camera to a photography shop run by Sebastian Pedersen, hoping to learn what it might fetch. He says he will send an estimate and photographs her as she leaves. When she returns, the print of herself amazes her, and Pedersen explains how images are made and hands her extra equipment for the Contessa. Because she cannot pay, he keeps the camera but lets her use it. She begins photographing her children, asking them to keep it from Sigfrid.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Two years before filming began, Jan Troell met Mikael Persbrandt at a Swedish film festival and started imagining him as Sigfrid; Persbrandt then got in touch with Troell himself and persuaded him to give him the role.
- Jan Troell's wife began researching in 1986, interviewing Maria Larsson's daughter, and the real Maria's photographs she found were used as inspiration for the pictures seen in the film.
- Jan Troell shot the film on 16 mm and had it blown up to 35 mm so the grain would suit the early 1900s and early silent cinema; he deliberately kept the colours down and used sepia tones like those of Victor Sjöström's films.
- The real Maria Larsson lived in Gothenburg, but the film moves her story to Malmö, the city director Jan Troell himself comes from.
