Plot summary
King Johan III of Sweden discovers that his Scottish mercenaries are plotting and orders them out of the country, jailing their commanders. Three of them, Sir Archie, Sir Filip and Sir Donald, escape and flee to Marstrand, hoping to sail home to Scotland. Sir Arne of Solberga, a wealthy vicar, keeps a chest of treasure said to have been taken from monasteries, and lore holds that it will be his doom. His wife speaks of three men sharpening long knives nearby. That night the three enter the house, kill the family, take the chest and burn the building. Only Arne's daughter Elsalill survives, and a traveling fishmonger brings her to Marstrand. There she meets Sir Archie and they fall in love, neither knowing who the other is.
