Plot summary
In Saumur, Félix Grandet reigns over his household. His wife and his daughter Eugénie live there with nothing to distract them. He is extremely avaricious, and the colossal fortune he keeps from everyone must not be damaged by anything. Suitors rush to ask for Eugénie's hand, and he takes no favorable view of them. Then his nephew Charles, a Parisian dandy left orphaned and ruined, arrives and turns the young woman's life upside down.
