Plot summary
Chickasaw Falls High School faces a school board decision to merge it with other schools in the area. The board also requires every employee to hold a high school diploma, and the janitor Ernest P. Worrell has an incomplete high school transcript. He chooses to repeat the twelfth grade rather than resign, joining the student body and taking regular classes and part in school activities, with mishaps and distractions along the way. The principal soon tells him he is failing. Miss Flugal, who is Ernest's love interest, puts him in charge of the marching band and its preparation for the halftime show at the football game.
