Plot summary
Jade Butterfield finishes high school with a scholarship and few friends, her time given to her studies. At a restaurant with her parents after graduation she asks for a party, and there David Elliot, a classmate who has liked her for years, works as a valet. When a customer insults Jade, David punches him and loses the job. At the party only her parents' friends come until David shuts down a competing party with a false noise complaint. He and Jade grow close, but Hugh, a doctor who wants Jade in medical school, disapproves. Jade gives up a summer internship to stay with David, so Hugh moves the family to their lake house, and David follows. Anne, Jade's mother, asks Hugh to give him a chance.
